Xaxaba Camp is run by Afrika Ecco Safaris from the local Xaxaba community. It is located on a private island deep within the heart of the Okavango Delta, a world-heritage site renown for its abundance of wildlife. This is a true rustic, wilderness experience ideal for the wild at heart. The focus here is on the community, the wildlife and untouched views in an area not known to many visitors. The island overlooks the famous Chief’s Island, and guests will have the opportunity to enjoy walks on this island. There are plenty of activities to enjoy that cater for the adventurous.
Expect mokoro trips in traditional canoes, fishing and visits to the local community village. There’s even an opportunity to celebrate golden hour in a special sundowner spot on the banks of the intricate waterways. Boat excursions are also availble, but only when the water levels are adequate (generally June/July) which you'd need to check beforehand.
There are a maximum of 6 Meru-style tents individually set-up in a prime location overlooking the world-renown Chief's Island. Each of the tents sleeps 2 people, which means the camp can accommodate 12 people in total. This is the perfect place for an intimate crowd that favours an authentic "glamping" experience where the focus is on game viewing, activities and staying in a remote location. Xaxaba Camp is a rustic camp, but offers all the basics and comforts from home. You will sleep on raised beds and enjoy exhilarating outdoor bucket showers, while all your other basic needs will be tended to. Xababa Island is run by the community, and the tented camp will be in one of 3 locations on the island. The team will set-up everything up prior to your arrival, making this a completely non-participatory camping experience. Experience a back-to-basics rustic safari experience in an eco-friendly camp
Each of the 6 tents sleeps 2 people on individual stretchers. Comfortable linen, pillows and a mattress is provided, ensuring a good night's sleep. Each tent has an ensuite canvas bathroom complete with bucket shower and eco-bush toilet. To freshen and spruce up, you are provided with standing hand basins that are constantly renewed with fresh water. There is also a seating area just outside your tent, complete with a canvas shade cover.
Each of the tents are supplied with lanterns (one per tent), but we do recommend you bring along a torch as there is no electricity. This also means you cannot charge your items and will need to bring spare batteries. Despite the camp being rustic, you will still enjoy house keeping and turn downs. Tents are also sprayed to prevent mosquitoes and bugs. In essence, accommodation is perfectly adequate and supplies all the creature comforts from home.
The structure and itinerary is quite flexible, and determined by group dynamics and presence of wildlife. Activities take place on the waterways and on Chief's Island and Xaxaba Island. This is a water based safari experience, with plenty of set activities on offer. Guests also have the option of indulging in a bit of fishing, but will need to bring their own equipment.
